6. Film marketing website

Fantastic 4. the rise of the silver surfer.

The film marketing website for the silver surfer is an iteractive website promoting their new film. It is different to a billboard advert or a television edvert in that it gives you the opputunity to browse the site and look at what you want to. As well as it coming out before any adverts for the film itself.

It allows you to see the film sypnosis, and watch a very enigmatic trailer on the film, leaving you wanting more.

The audience for the film and website is probably male teenagers and young adults, interested in comics, super heroes, action films and Jessica alba.

Institutions for the film are all at the bottom of the film, 2 recognisable institutions being MARVEL, the make of the comic that the film was created from. And 20th century fox, a huge film distributor.

The website has a very themed background and all the links are themed with metallic effects and sound effects as you click them, all adding to the effect and impact of this marketing website

It targets teenagers and young adults as it humour is very dark and sometimes political and works around being politically incorrect.

The fat pie website is offering people with the talents such as animation and short film making the chance to have their work put up on the web for it to be seen by others. Jerry Jackson and other comedy series’ on their such as ‘devo’ have become quite well known among teenagers.

This is a good example of interactivity for teenagers and a chance to get active and inspired on doing similar sorts of things.

13. downloading music

Music downloadsgave become increasingly popular, downloads have become a large part of music that they are included in the music charts when deciding the positioning of songs.

why they are becoming increasingly popular

  • Audiences can get the music easily from the internet for free e.g. Limewire or at a cheap cost e.g. iTunes, the music transfers directly to your PC and can be played immediately and transferred onto your mp3.

  • You can download the music in the comfort of your home instead of going out to buy it or buying the CD on the internet and waiting for it to arrive. This therefore makes it convenient and flexible to audiences.

  • downloading a song can take as little time as a few seconds, going out to buy a cd can literally end up taking a whole day.

audience

Downloading has become most popular with the young- teenagers and young adults as they have less money to spend on music and know how to actually download music.

institutions

positives

‘There are currently 300 legal digital music websites, three times as many as existed a year ago. Digital music services have registered 2.2m subscribers around the world, which is up from 1.5m in January. The two most popular are iTunes, offering 1.5m tracks and Napster, which offers 1.2m.’ Jul 25, 2005 PASSAGE FROM BBC NEWS ARTICLE

Negatives

Big record labels have seen their sales slide precipitously in the past several years, and have blamed the falling revenue in large part on rampant free music downloads online. Others have pointed to additional factors, such as lower household spending during the recession, and increased competition from other entertainment forms such as DVDs and video games, each of which have grown over the same time period.

Theory. Convenience, cheapness, quick.

14. hottt phenomenon- i-phone

The i-phone is a multimedia/Internet-enabled phone announced by Apple CEO Steve Jobs during the keynote address at the Macworld Conference & Expo on January 9, 2007.The iPhone's functions include those of a

  • a multimedia player

  • mobile telephone

  • Internet services like e-mail

  • text messaging

  • web browsing

  • wireless connectivity

  • and a camera phone

iPhone input is accomplished via touchscreen with virtual keyboard and buttons. The iPhone is a quad-band GSM phone, though Jobs mentioned in his keynote that Apple has a "plan to make 3G phones" in the future. Apple has filed over 200 patents related to the technology behind the iPhone.More features include a widescreen I-pod , Touch-screen Technology, Web Browsing & Internet Maps .The iPhone has a scheduled United States release date of June 2007. It will be available from the Apple Store and from Cingular Wireless, with a price of US$499 for the 4 GB model and US$599 for the 8 GB model, based on a two-year service contract. Apple has also announced plans to make the iPhone available in Europe and Japan at a later dateThis product is a brand new phenomenon that is tipped to rival even the highest selling of MP3 Players & particularly high selling mobile phones. In the case of the highest selling MP3 player being the i-Pod, Apple as a company won’t be in any disadvantage as their own product will be displacing the other.

3. Website page for a programme: SKINS

Skins website
http://www.channel4.com/entertainment/tv/microsites/S/skins/index.html

The Skins website has a range of interactivity for the consumer and the fans of the programme.
The website offers all of this interactivity, and then promises to offer more if the consumer is willing to register to the website or ‘sign up’. By registering, it allows you to be a ‘member of the skins community’ and receive text alerts, emails and other freebies.
By keeping the consumer updated on the latest news in skins, it doesn’t only benefit them but also Channel 4, itself because it is guaranteeing more viewers and publicity.
The publicity and advertising for this programme has been huge. As well as all of the billboard adds and constant television adds, there was a huge launch party set up as well as the official website and to promote it even more to their target audience they have a very popular and official myspace page and also a MYSPACE (
www.myspace.com/e4skins) page for each character in which viewers can sign in and find out all different kinds of things about the programme aswell as watching new trailers each week.
One of the ways that interactivity is offered on the official skins website is through chat forums. The chat forums are places where all of the fans a ‘members’ of the skins programme can share there interest and meet new people. The forums can be personalised as the members can create their own forums with a title that might appeal to different people. For example, one of the forums headings is “How Nice Is Tony!”
This would suggestively relate to all of the females who fancy the pants off Nicholas Hoult. (btw yes that’s right, I have been working with him for the last month)
There is also an opportunity for the consumer to comment the blog of skins as there is a direct link to their ‘myspace’ webpage. This would allow the consumer to communicate with the institution on a more personal level also suggests that the programme is targeted at the younger generation as myspace blogs are a new development and only utilised by teenagers.
The main benefit that the consumer receives from the Skins website is the opportunity to watch ‘Unseen Skins’, the unseen footage that has not been broadcasted officially. This would give the consumer a sense that they were discovering something that had not been seen before.
There is also the opportunity to watch episodes of Skins after they have been shown on t.v, on the myspace webpage which encourages interactivity.
The offer of watching trailers to all of the episodes on the website is another benefit and it gives the institution the ability to rake in new viewers. New viewers that are not aware of the storyline or characters in the programme can get a taste of the programme by watching the trailers and potentially gain more viewers. The trailers are also specific to different characters which allow the new viewers to get a greater insight into the characters personality before they begin watching the programme.
The Skins competitions that the consumers are able to enter are very current and modern and allow consumer to get more intouch with the media they are consuming, it allows them to be more a part of it. redesigning the logo, styling the characters for a shoot in ‘More’ magazine, composing the music which will accompany a scene in episode 5 and creating a short film based around one of the characters. The winners of these competitions are then published on the website which gives the winners a sense of pride and gives all of those wanting to compete, an incentive to do well.

7. online magazine: be-mag, rollerblading magazine

http://be-mag.com/home.php

This is a website for rollerblading magazine be-mag. With daily updates and pages where you can quickly browse the latest, skate news, skate tours and events in the world of rollerblading. It’s like a quick way of reading a magazine. It would be useful for those who don’t have time to buy and read the whole magazine or just for people who want to find out more on what they've already read. It’s relevant because it’s showing how hard copies of media are being replaced, and how there is the possibility of media becoming completely virtual.

Page layout and offers

Headings down the side: be-mag issue 20. Australia scene reports. Inside the industry. Live updates on ‘valo’ slate tour. 10 years of be-mag, Brian Aragon, professional rollerblader. Italian rollerleague. ‘Different minds 2’ review- a DVD production. First trailer of be-mag’s new DVD. Connor O’brian interview- professional rollerblader. Rollerblade wheels review. Be’mag’s 10th anniversary.
As you can see here there are many different articles here which you can quickly browse through, the internet allowing you to download pictures and videos very quickly.

Other websites mentioned: skatepile, revolution skateshop, grindhouse, ignition skateshop.

These are all online shopping websites that are featured on the homepage. This allows you to enter these sights and look at skate products with ease and allows you to do some online shopping. Be-mag also have their own online shop, which they advertise on the homepage with a picture link.

The home page: taken up with promotions and new additions to the site. Competitions, Latest News, tour Updates from all over the world, video trailers, links to pictures, advertisements, products, interviews, events.

Interactivity: have your on say on be-log, write in and tell them what you think, send in your own pictures for other readers to see and admire. All of this promoting the rollerblading world more and more.

For the institutions:
· Gives them a sense of who reads their magazine (if people sign up for things, give their details)
· Promotes customer loyalty, those who read the magazine are likely to come online and then buy more on be-mag’s products
· Keeping up with NMT trends; everything has a website. They are closer to their audience thanks to the sense of an online community.
· Can promote their next issue

Convergence, interactivity, personalisation, convenience, narrowcasting.

Sky
What it is
Sky is a television broadcaster, broadcasting a huge variety of channels across the nation
It offers greater experiences from the usual terrestrial channels and it gives people a lot more variety in their television viewing; therefore being more entertaining for viewers.
Sky offers a wide range of new technologies; interactive services, online websites, and sky plus, in which viewers can rewind and record television programmes onto their sky plus box, enabling viewers to more or less create their own channel.
Audiences
As far as audience is concerned, everyone is part of it, whether it’s trendy teenagers, to little girls, to a happily married couple, to grandparents, etc. sky has so many channels and so many programmes that there is something for everyone, therefore appealing to all social groups.
These days audiences younger and younger are able to pick up a remote and watch what they want to and when they want to, they are able to use the remote to play games interactively, they are even able to go online and look at websites of their favourite shows. And the same applies to other audiences.
Institutions
The main institutions involved in sky are BRITISH SKY BROADCASTING and SKY. There are also hundreds of other institutions involved. Any independent TV production companies who have a show on sky television are an institution involved as well as MTV, or CARTOON NETWORK who have their own channel.
Advertising institutions can also utilise sky’s technology to maximise sales. They can target certain audiences by putting their adverts on niche channels with more narrow audiences- e.g. advertising toys on children’s channels such as nickelodeon.
Media texts
You can access hundreds of links to more media content;
Music- Robbie Williams single competition, MTV Europe music awards, Q and FHM television, and lots more
TV guide- on here u can access more information on links to new websites about most of the programmes that are showing on sky
What you can do on the website
Search through various different sky options on the home page; sky plus, sky HD, sky anytime. The home page offers you different packages and the links explaining the package they are trying to sell you- this would mainly be aimed at a more adult audience as they would be buying this.
You can also look at the TV GUIDE, letting you search through all the channels and programmes you would be able to watch. It also gives you television recommendations.
On the homepage you can click links to sky sports, sky movies, sky news etc.
You can also get interactive and change your own sky account settings and account details.
